Why have Psychotherapeutic Counselling?

26th July 2016

Life can be really tough at times. Even existing and paying the bills is enough but on top of that there are many unexpected challenges such as illness, life events, losses and addictions. Sometimes it’s important to recognize that you need someone to talk to and that someone needs to be from outside your immediate circle or family unit. Friends and family are important but when you are feeling particularly vulnerable it sometimes takes the pressure off a bit to speak to someone who is removed from your circumstances and not so emotionally involved with you.

Listening is a very special thing. When we are truly listened to and accepted as we are it can be transformational and healing. Many people think of ‘therapy’ as lying on a couch and talking about your life but there’s a lot more to it than that. The therapeutic relationship is unique because it allows you to express yourself in a confidential space where you are not going to get the reactions you get from everyday conversations. Many people say that their therapist is one of the closest alies they’ve ever had and that doesn’t mean they are not challenged through the relationship but their counsellor is the person who is rooting for them and supportive through turbulent chapters in their life.

If we bottle ‘stuff’ up we either push it down into our bodies or we contain the emotion until it overflows in unexpected ways. Counselling gives you a space for you – to talk, process and make sense of your experiences. Some sessions may be a bit cathartic and others very practical and full of creative ideas to address your situation. Some people want to be held to account i.e. commit through counselling to stop a destructive habit or pattern and others simply want to talk about the pattern and understand it’s roots in childhood or earlier in life.

There is no fixed process for this kind of work. If you go into counselling short-term to address a particular life event then you may only need 12 sessions or if you are really struggling and feel your life isn’t working for you and hasn’t for some time then you may choose to work with a psychotherapeutic counsellor for an extended period of time.
